The name Calabasas is derived from the Spanish calabaza, meaning "pumpkin" or "gourd." Local legend has it that in the late 1700's, explorer Juan Bautista de Anza was traveling through the area when, suddenly, his wagon full of pumpkins ​overturned.  A few months later, the area saw its first pumpkin patch!  ​

Of note, also, is The Leonis Adobe, an adobe structure in Old Town Calabasas, dates from 1844 and is one of the oldest surviving buildings in greater Los Angeles.

Prior to becoming incorporated in 1991, Calabasas was an unincorporated portion of Los Angeles County.
