LET’S TALK ABOUT IT.
How is fog-coating made and applied?
Purchase a small 25lb bag of fog-coat for $36, then as per manufacturer's directions, "add 15-16 gallons of water", mix enough water "until you get the consistency of milk", then, "strain through a screen or nylon stocking". Apply with Hudson ® type pump sprayer. Covers about 2,000 square feet.
"No thank you”.
12 QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
1.) I heard stucco “needs to breath”, so we shouldn’t paint. is this correct? Answer: No. This issue is about moisture retention and fog coating allows moisture to be retained unlike stucco paint. All latex paints allow air molecules to pass through them. Since because water molecules are bigger, those don’t pass through. However, in fog-coating, moisture is absorbed.
2.) Will fog coating stay as clean and uniform as paint? Answer: Absolutely not.
3.) So it will stain? Answer: Yes. It is only colored cement, therefore it will attract staining.
4.) How soon will it stain? Answer: Right away. Is this covered under warranty? Answer: No.
5.) If stucco and fog coating absorbs moisture, won't my building look mottled when it get wets for any reason? Answer: Yes.
6.) So painted stucco won’t absorb moisture or stain like fog coating? Answer. Correct.
7.) Doesn’t the moisture need to wick down the wall and escape via the weep screed? When you building is painted, water will no longer get into the stucco. Water will not penetrate past the paint coating; water simply drips off the edge down the wall. The paint coating sheds water infinitely faster than color impregnated stucco or fog coating and can be power washed for maintenance cleanliness as well.
8.) We have issues with pests and wood rot. Will fog coating companies be able to caulk any joints between wood and stucco surfaces to stop moisture from rotting the wood? Answer: No. Fog coaters don’t use caulking. Painters use caulking. Caulking must bridge two surfaces and therefore both surfaces need to have the caulking painted over because standard latex caulk is required to be painted and should not be left unpainted. Fog coating doesn’t have an answer for this.
9.) If the stucco absorbs moisture and that is directly touching the wood, isn't that bad for the wood? Answer by fog coating company: "Your stucco needs to breath"
10.) Fog coaters say their products have additional binders and such put in them, to help them be stronger. Answer; Oh, you mean like paint?
11.) So will fog-coating protect our buildings paper under the stucco as well as paint? Answer by fog coating company: "Your stucco needs to breath"
12.) What if the stucco get's cracks? Won't that further expose our building’s water proof paper to moisture or pests? Answer by fog coating company: Call us back.
No need to be left in the fog.
