thingies

Firstly, this is nothing to get legalistic over! No one is going to give you a pat on the back for blurting our “that’s not a baluster!” at a job walk so don’t do it! Both balusters and spindles or pickets are all basically doing the same things. All have a top rail but spindles (see picture) have a bottom railing supporting the spindle above the deck or flooring. You’ll see this most often at exterior deck railings. On your interior staircase, you will typically see the baluster directly attached into a base form or tread ( so no raised bottom railing). But for us, you can call them whatever you want and we know what you mean! Call them “thingies” and we’re still on board! Yes, we replace those thingies all the time! They are super important to keep what needs to stay inside the balcony inside, especially smaller humans and pets! So take them serious, check them, and replace them when they need it!
