Is it really wrought iron?
A beautiful example of hand forged wrought iron.
Let’s get educated.
Firstly, this is nothing to get legalistic over! No one is going to give you a pat on the back for blurting our “that’s not wrought iron!” at a job walk so don’t do it! But is it really wrought iron? The odds that your typical HOA fence is really “wrought iron”, is very slim. What they most typically have, is manufactured steel fencing made from sections and assorted widths and gauges of steel tubing.
The term wrought means “worked by hand”, as in forged by a blacksmith. Wrought iron is not hollow, it’s solid, so it can be hammered, twisted and bent into shapes.
Iron = occurs naturally.
Steel = Does not occur naturally but is a mixture, also known as an alloy, of iron and carbon mixed together.
Which rusts faster, iron or steel? Steel rusts faster.
Which is stronger, iron or steel? Steel is stronger than iron.
This is all steel with the exception of the turned (wrought iron) pickets and curved flat bar (wrought iron) rail. It is typical to see a mixture of steel and wrought iron on nicer HOA gates.
